Small cardboard boxes are all about a close fit. For compact products, samples and accessories, an oversized box looks careless and lets the item rattle around; a box sized tightly to the product presents it well and protects it in a bag, drawer or parcel. At small sizes the tolerances are tight, so the difference between a neat pack and a cheap-feeling one is often just a couple of millimetres.
Getting a tight fit
Made to your custom size in cardboard, a small box can be dimensioned to the item with only the clearance needed to pack and unpack it. That precision matters more at small sizes, where even a few millimetres of slack is obvious and makes the pack feel cheap.
Presentation and use
- Internal size matched tightly to the item
- A closure suited to how the box is opened
- Print scaled sensibly for a small surface
Because artwork reads differently at small sizes, keep the design clear and legible. Order a sample to check both the fit and how the print scales before a run. Because there is little room for artwork, a clear, uncluttered design usually reads better than one trying to say too much.
