Choosing a box sounds simple until you sit down to do it. The style you pick changes how your product survives the post, how it looks on a shelf and how it feels in a customer’s hands. We print hundreds of box designs across seventeen ranges, and when we help people narrow the choice down, it almost always comes back to a few honest questions.
How does your product reach the customer?
If it goes in the post, the box has to cope with sorting machines, van floors and the occasional doorstep drop. Mailer boxes are built for exactly that: corrugated walls, locking flaps and a lid that opens flat on the customer’s table, ready to turn an ordinary delivery into an unboxing moment.
If it sells from a shelf or counter, the box becomes your salesperson. Retail boxes give you clean printable faces that stack and front up neatly. And when the product itself is the best advert — baked goods, gifts, crafts — a window box lets it do the talking through a clear panel.
If it is handed over in person, at a market stall or a salon counter, think about the carry. Paper bags and pillow boxes suit lighter items that should look lovely on the way out of the door.
How heavy or fragile is it?
Weight and fragility decide the material before style comes into it. Sturdy cardboard boxes carry weight without adding much of their own, and the corrugated fluting acts as built-in cushioning. For heavier or precious items, a thick-walled rigid box holds its shape under pressure in a way folding board never will. Whatever you choose, match the board to the product rather than hoping for the best — a box that arrives crushed costs far more in refunds and goodwill than the sturdier board would have.
What should opening it feel like?
Some boxes are ripped open; some are lifted. If your product is a gift or a treat-yourself purchase, that moment matters. Rigid boxes have real weight and a slow, satisfying lift-off lid — the sort of box that is worth keeping, and a kept box means your brand stays on a shelf in someone’s home. Our gift boxes and jewellery boxes follow the same thinking at every size: the box should feel like part of the present.
What should the box say before it’s opened?
Materials talk. Unbleached kraft boxes say natural, handmade and honest before a single word is printed on them — a favourite for soaps, bakery treats and craft products. Bright, fully printed board says confident and established, and suits busy retail shelves where you have a second or two to be noticed.
A note on food
Food has its own rules: the box needs to suit what goes inside it, from a warm burger to a delicate cake slice. Our food boxes and cupcake boxes are shaped around the food they hold, so you are not forcing a pastry into a box that was really designed for a phone charger.
Whatever you choose, get the fit right
A box that fits snugly protects better, needs less void fill and looks more considered when opened. Measure your product’s length, width and depth before you order anything — it is the five-minute job that improves every decision after it.
